Lighthouse Keeper recognition ceremony April 13, 2019

On Saturday, April 13, 2019, members of the Chapter will return to Mathews County, VA to honor six Chesapeake Bay lighthouse keepers at rest at several county cemeteries. We will dedicate new U.S. Lighthouse Service plaques at the graves of Keepers Frank Raymond Lewis, Nelson Stanley Atherton, Levi D. Marchant, Isaac Foster, William James Diggs and Wesley Foster Ripley. Keeper Atherton will also be recognized for his Coast Guard duty in the Pacific Theater during WWII. These six heroes are buried in “Virginia’s lighthouse keepers county”.  Each ceremony will be approximately 30 minutes long. Note that Keeper Marchant spent 32 years at the off-shore Stingray Point Lighthouse – one of the longest tenures in the U. S. Lighthouse Service. The ceremonies will be held rain or shine. In 2018, the Chapter honored our first six keepers in Mathews County who “crossed the bar”, including Clarence and Fannie May Salter.
