From Pratt Street past Inner Harbor, get in far left lane, turn left onto President Street. Take next left onto Lombard Street, follow straight 0.7 mi. (10 traffic signals) to Howard Street. Turn left on Howard, continue straight to 395S. Proceed 1.0 mile to 95N on-ramp towards New York. Take 95N approx. 36 miles (thru Fort McHenry Tunnel, $4.00 toll) to Exit 89, Rt. 155. Bear right to Rt. 155 off ramp; proceed 1.3 mi. to Rt. 40. Bear right onto Rt. 40, go 0.4 mi. to traffic light. Bear left at traffic light onto Otsego Street (Rt. 7), follow 0.5 mi. to end of Otsego at railroad underpass. Turn right onto Union Avenue, proceed 0.9 mi. to Lafayette Street. Turn left on Lafayette. Lighthouse is directly ahead, parking on street.

To Millers Island Lighthouse:

From Concord Point (approx. drive time 55 min, 41.2 miles)
At the intersection of Lafayette and Union, turn right onto Union. Proceed 0.9 mi. to Otsego (Rt. 7) at railroad underpass. Turn left on Otsego, then right on Juniata Street, then left on Superior. Follow signs to 95S towards Baltimore. Take 95S approx. 20 miles to I695S via Exit 64. Keep right to Exit 64 then get in left lane to enter I695 to Essex (towards Dundalk/Key Bridge). Enter I695 in approx. 2.0 miles and continue on I695 for approx. 7.0 miles to Exit 42, MD 151/North Point Blvd. towards Sparrows Point (don’t take Exit 40). Follow exit around to the right onto North Point Blvd. Then in 0.2 mile get in far left lane at lighted intersection. Turn left onto North Point Road and proceed 1.7 miles to Millers Island Road (at Bay Shore Bar & Grill). Turn slight left onto Millers Island Road and continue approx. 1.3 miles where it becomes Cuckold Point Road. Continue an additional 0.3 mile to Dock of The Bay Restaurant on the right.

From Seven Foot Knoll (approx. drive time 35 min, 14.5 miles )
Turn left from Pier 5 Parking lot onto Eastern Ave and continue straight for 4.7 miles to MD 151, North Point Blvd. South. Turn right and stay on North Point Blvd. for approx. 5.0 miles through I695 underpass. Turn left at next intersection onto North Point Road and proceed 1.7 mi. to Millers Island Road (at Bay Shore Bar & Grill). Turn slight left. In approx. 1.3 miles Millers Island Road becomes Cuckold Point Road. Continue an additional 0.3 mi. to Dock of The Bay Restaurant on right.

From Millers Island Lighthouse:

To Concord Point Lighthouse (approx. drive time 1 hour, 38.9 miles)
Turn left exiting Dock of The Bay parking lot onto Cuckold Point Road. Proceed 0.3 miles where Cuckold becomes Millers Island Road. Continue straight for 1.3 miles to stop sign. Turn slight right at intersection onto North Point Road and proceed 1.7 mi. to lighted intersection at North Point Blvd. (MD151). Turn right and merge onto I695N Beltway towards Essex. Stay on I695N for approx. 10 miles and merge onto I95N via Exit 33 towards New York. Take I95N approx. 16 miles to Exit 89, Rt. 155. Bear right onto Rt. 155 off ramp. Proceed 1.3 miles to Rt. 40. Bear right onto Rt. 40, go 0.4 miles to traffic light. Bear left at traffic light onto Otsego Street (Rt. 7), follow 0.5 miles to end of Otsego at railroad underpass. Turn right onto Union Avenue and proceed 0.9 miles to Lafayette Street. Turn left on Lafayette. Lighthouse is directly ahead, parking on street.

To Seven Foot Knoll (approx. drive time 35 min, 14.5 miles)
Turn left exiting Dock of The Bay parking lot onto Cuckold Point Road. Proceed 0.3 miles where Cuckold becomes Millers Island Road and continue straight 1.3 miles to stop sign. Turn slight right at intersection onto North Point Road and proceed 1.7 mi. to lighted intersection at North Point Blvd. (MD151). Turn right and merge onto I695N Beltway towards Essex. Proceed for approx. 3.4 mi. keeping right and merge onto MD151 via Exit 40 (NOT Cove Road, Exit 41). Continue approx. 1.5 miles and exit onto Rt. 150 West to Eastern Ave towards Baltimore. Continue straight on Eastern Ave for 4.7 mi. to its end passing through the last intersection of Eastern and Presidents Street into the Pier 5 Parking area. The lighthouse is located on your left at the end of Pier 5. Suggestion: Pier V (Five) Parking Garage is on right.

From Sandy Point Shoal (approx. drive time 48 min, 36.0 miles)
After passing the Contact Station, continue on College Park to the Route 50W/Washington DC entrance. Continue on Route 50W to exit 21, Rt. 97N. Proceed 21.3 mi. on Rt. 97N to 695W (exit 17A-toward Baltimore). Drive 2.0 mi. to exit 7B, the Baltimore Washington Parkway (Rt. 295). Follow parkway 5.3 mi. to Pratt Street in downtown Baltimore. Turn right on Pratt, proceed past the Convention Center to Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. Park in street, garage, lot or metered parking in the vicinity of Pier 5. Lighthouse is located at end of Pier 5. Suggestion: Pier V (Five) Parking Garage (Pier V at Pratt).

From Museum parking lot, turn left on Talbot Street (East Rt. 33), go 9.5 mi. to Rt. 322. Turn left on Rt. 322, proceed 2.0 mi. to Rt. 50W at traffic signal. Continue straight onto Rt. 50W, then 39.8 mi. (crossing Bay Bridge, no toll) to Exit 32.  Follow the signs to the right to Sandy Point State Park. The viewing point is at East Beach, the first left after the Contact Station.

From Fort Washington (approx. drive time 1 hour 30 min, 50.2 miles)
Head southeast on Fort Washington Rd. toward Halyard Pl. (1.8 mi). At the traffic circle, continue straight to stay on Fort Washington Rd. Use any lane to turn left onto MD-210N (3.7 mi). Use the right 2 lanes to merge onto I-495/I-95N towards Baltimore (0.9mi). From I-495, take exit 19A to merge onto US-50E (15.1 mi). Take exit 32 toward Oceanic Dr. (25.8 mi). .  This is the LAST exit before crossing the Bay Bridge. From the exit, follow the signs to Sandy Point State Park.  The viewing point is at East Beach, the first left after the Contact Station.

From Drum Point (approx. drive time 1 hour 40 min, 70.3 miles)
Exit Calvert Marine Museum and turn right onto Rt. 2, then follow to left lane entrance onto Rt. 2-4 North to Annapolis. Proceed approx. 28 mi. to Rt. 2 North. Turn right on Rt. 2 N toward Annapolis, drive approx. 13 mi. to tr3affic circle, then right on Rt. 2 North (Annapolis). Proceed straight on Rt. 2 (Solomons Island Rd.) approx. 13 mi. to Rt. 50E (on-ramp).Follow Rt. 50E to Exit 32. .  This is the LAST exit before crossing the Bay Bridge. From the exit, follow the signs to Sandy Point State Park.  The viewing point is at East Beach, the first left after the Contact Station.

From Sandy Point Shoal (approx. drive time 1 hr 14 min, 43.6 miles)
Take 50E towards the Bay Bridge. There is also a one-way Bay Bridge toll when crossing west to east.  The toll costs for a regular car/SUV are $4.00 cash, $6.00 video toll, $2.50 with a MD E-ZPass, and $4.00 with an out-of-state E-ZPass. Continue on Rt. 50E to Rt. 322, just north of Easton. Bear right onto Rt. 322, go 2.0 mi. to Rt. 33 (St. Michaels Road). Turn right on Rt. 33, proceed 9.5 mi. to Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum entrance (in downtown St. Michaels just beyond Mill Street). Turn right into museum parking area.

From Choptank River Lighthouse (approx. drive time 40min, 26.3 miles)
From lighthouse parking area, proceed on High Street to first light (Church St.). Turn left on Church St. for 0.2 miles past Gay St. to Market St. lighted intersection. Turn left and proceed across drawbridge onto Maryland Ave. Continue on Maryland Ave. for 0.5 miles to Route 50W. Turn left onto Rt. 50W proceed across the Choptank River Bridge and go 12.3 miles to Rt. 322. Turn left onto Rt 322 and proceed 3.0 mi. to Rt. 33 (St. Michaels Road). From Hooper Strait (approx. drive time 40 min, 26.4 miles)
From Museum parking lot, turn left on Talbot Street (East Rt. 33), go 9.5 mi. to Rt. 322. Turn right on Rt. 322, proceed 3.0 mi. and merge onto Rt. 50E. Drive approx. 12.1 mi. on Rt. 50E. Cross the Malkus Bridge over the Choptank River, entering Cambridge. Turn right at the first light onto Maryland Avenue. Go through two traffic lights for approx. 0.5 mi. Cross the Cambridge Creek drawbridge and take an immediate right onto Spring Street. At the second light, turn right onto High Street. Continue for 0.3 miles until you reach the river at Long Wharf Park. You’ll see the lighthouse at the end of Pier A.

From Hooper Island Add-On Cruise (approx. drive time 30 min, 17.7 miles)
Head southeast on MD-335N toward MD-334E/MD-336E (0.6 mi). Turn left onto MD-335N/Golden Hill Rd. (9.7 mi).  Turn right onto MD-16E/Church Creek Rd. (5.0 mi). Turn left onto Race St. (.3 mi). Turn right onto Washington St. (482 ft).

Drum Point and Cove Point

From Sandy Point Shoal (approx. drive time1 hour 20 min, 63.3 miles)
After passing the Contact Station, continue on College Park to the Route 50W/Washington DC entrance. Continue on Route 50W to exit to Exit 23A (Parole) to Rt. 2 South (Solomons Island Rd.). Continue approx. 13 mi. to traffic circle, follow sign to Rt. 2 to Prince Frederick. Proceed approx. 13 mi., bear left on Rt. 2-4 South to Prince Frederick/Solomons. Continue straight approx. 28 mi. to Solomons Island Rd. exit just before Gov. Thomas Johnson Bridge. Follow signs to the Calvert Marine Museum.

From Point Lookout (approx. drive time 40 min, 25.1 miles)
Leave the Point Lookout State Park via the main drive. Continue north on Rt. 5 for 7.1 miles – until you reach the blinking light at Rt. 5 and Rt. 235. Turn right onto Rt. 235N. Continue north on Rt. 235, for 17.3 miles, pass the Patuxent River Naval Air Station. Turn right onto Rt. 4 north. Continue on Rt. 4 N for 4 miles. Cross over the Thomas Johnson Bridge to Solomons, MD. After crossing the bridge – bear right immediately and follow signs for the Calvert Marine Museum. Turn left into the museum complex.

Point Lookout

From Drum Point (approx. drive time 40 min, 25.4 miles)
From the Calvert Marine Museum, follow Rt. 4 South over the Thomas Johnson Bridge. Continue on Rt. 4 for 4 miles to traffic light. Turn left onto Rt. 235 South. Follow Rt. 235 for 17.3 miles to Rt. 5 South. Rt. 235 dead ends at blinking light at Rt. 5. Turn left onto Rt. 5. Continue towards the Point Lookout State Park. The lighthouse is located at the end of Rt. 5 within the park. Stay on the main drive through the park until you reach the lighthouse or designated parking for the Challenge.

From Piney Point (approx. drive time 40 min, 27.0 miles)
Go back out Lighthouse Road, 1.4 miles. Turn left onto Rt. 249N and continue for 7.7 miles. Turn right onto Rt. 5 S and continue heading south (20.8 miles) passing through St. Mary’s City. Follow signs to Point Lookout State Park. The lighthouse is located at the end of Rt. 5 within the park. Stay on the main drive through the park until you reach the lighthouse or designated parking for the Challenge.

Piney Point

From Point Lookout (approx. drive time 40 min, 27.0 miles)
Return to Rt. 5. Turn left onto Rt. 5 North for 20.8 miles. In Callaway, turn left onto Rt. 249S (Piney Pt. Road) and continue for 7.7 miles to Lighthouse Road. (Maryland Landmark sign). Turn right and follow Lighthouse Road for 1.4 miles to museum and parking area.

From Fort Washington (approx. drive time 1 hour 30 min, 62.9 miles)
Note: Be cautious of on-going construction on Rt. 210/Indian Head Hwy.
Head southeast on Fort Washington Road toward Halyard Pl. (0.5 mi). Turn right onto Old Fort Road (1.6 mi). Turn right onto MD-210S (3.9 mi). Use the left 3 lanes to turn left onto MD-228E/Berry Rd. (3.8 mi). Turn right onto Middletown Rd. (2.9 mi). Turn left onto Billingsley Rd. (7.1 mi). Turn right onto MD-5S (14.6 mi). Turn right onto MD-5S/Point Lookout Rd. (19.8 mi). Note: Chesapeake Chapter volunteers WILL NOT be set up at this location. (You will need to allow an additional hour at this location, plus an additional 45 minutes driving time). Visiting this replica on St. Clement’s Island, the birthplace of Maryland, will require a short boat ride to and from the St. Clement’s Island Museum on the mainland ($7.00 charge). The first boat in the morning will depart from the Museum to the Island at 8:30 a.m, the last boat will depart from the Island to the Museum at 5:30 p.m. each day. High winds/heavy rains could cause boat cancellation. Call ahead in the event of inclement weather (301) 769-2222. You will be able to pick up the Blackistone Lighthouse souvenir at the lighthouse or at the Museum in the event that the boat is cancelled.
Tower will be open for climbing/ Donations welcome. Handicapped Access – Museum on mainland only.

To Blackistone Lighthouse
From Fort Washington (approximately 1hour 10 min, 52.4 miles)
Exit park onto Fort Washington Road and return to Rt. 210. Turn right on Rt. 210S and proceed 6 mi. to Rt. 228E. Turn left and continue 8.7 mi. crossing the Rt. 301 intersection just before merging onto Rt. 5S. Continue on Rt. 5S for 17.9 mi. to 5/235 split. At Rt. 5/235 split, bear right and continue on Rt. 5S to Rt. 242 in Morganza. Turn right at blinking light onto Rt. 242S and continue 4.0 mi. to traffic signal in Clements. Proceed straight on Rt. 242 for approx. 9.0 mi. to Colton’s Point. Turn left on Bay View Road at St. Clement’s Island Museum sign. Follow road to Museum parking area on the left.

From Piney Point (approx. drive time 45 min, 31.4 miles)
Return to Rt. 249N via Lighthouse Road (1.3 mi.). Make a left onto Rt. 249N and drive approx. 7.7 mi. to traffic signal. Make a left onto Rt. 5N and drive 10.2 mi. Turn left on Rt. 234. Continue 3.5 mi to stop light in Clements. At light, turn left on Rt. 242. Continue on Rt. 242 for approx. 9.0 mi. to Colton’s Point. Turn left on Bay View Road at St. Clement’s Island Museum sign. Follow road to Museum parking area on the left.

From Blackistone Lighthouse:
To Piney Point (approximately 45 min, 31.3 miles)
Exit St. Clement’s Island Museum parking area by turning right on Bay View Road. At the stop sign turn right on Rt. 242N, drive approx. 9.0 mi. to traffic signal in Clements. Turn right onto Rt. 234S. Continue 3.5 mi. and merge onto Rt. 5S. Continue on Rt. 5S 10.2 mi. to Rt. 249 in Callaway. Turn right at traffic signal onto Rt. 249S (Piney Point Road) and go approx. 7.7 mi. to Lighthouse Road. Turn right and follow Lighthouse Road for 1.4 miles to museum and parking area.

To Fort Washington (approximately 1 hour 10 min, 49.7 miles)
Note: Please be cautious of the on-going construction on Rt. 210/Indian Head Highway. Be alert for signs directing to Fort Washington State Park and follow accordingly.

Exit St. Clement’s Island Museum parking area by turning right on Bay View Road. At the stop sign turn right onto Rt. 242N, drive approx. 9.0 mi. to traffic signal in Clements. Go straight (across intersection) and continue on Rt. 242N for approx. 4.0 mi. to stop sign. Turn left onto Rt. 5N and drive 4.7 mi. to traffic signal. Go left and continue on Rt. 5N for 16.9 mi. Rt. 5/301 turns right, BUT YOU CONTINUE STRAIGHT on Business 5N for 1.7 mi. until you cross Rt. 301 and road becomes Rt. 228. Continue on Rt. 228 for approx. 7.0 mi. where Rt. 228 goes to the right and becomes 210N. Continue on 210N for approx. 6.0 mi. Turn left onto Fort Washington Road. Continue 3.3 mi. to the park entrance. Make a right off the main road onto L’Enfant Road (sign points to “Fishing Area/Lighthouse”.) Follow L’Enfant Road down to the River. There is a sign in the parking area at the end of the road. Walk the last few 100 yards to the Light Tower.

Fort Washington

From Sandy Point Shoal (approx. drive time 1 hour 5 min, 50.5 miles)
After exiting the contact station, continue on E. College Pkwy. Turn left to merge onto US-301S/US50W towards Washington (0.2 mi). Follow US-50W for 25.3 mi to exit 7A.  Merge onto 1-496S/I-95S toward Richmond. Use the right 2 lanes to take exit 3 for MD-210 toward Indian Head. Follow MD-210/Indian Head Hwy to Fort Washington Road (7.8 mi). Turn right onto Fort Washington Rd. At the traffic circle, continue straight to stay on Fort Washington Rd.**

From Piney Point (approx. drive time 1 hour 30 min, 60.7 miles)
Return to Rt. 249N via Lighthouse Road (1.3 mi). Make a left onto Rt. 249N and drive approx. 7.0 mi. Make a left onto Rt. 5N and drive 19.1 mi. to a dead end, turn left and continue on 5N for 16.9 mi. Follow Business 5N for 1.7 miles until you cross Rt. 301. Continue on Rt. 228 for 6.6 mi where Rt 228 goes to the right and becomes 210N. Continue on 210N for 5.8 miles. Turn left onto Fort Washington Road and continue east to park entrance. **

From VA or MD on I-95 (Capital Beltway)
From Virginia – driving on I-95 North, take local lanes into MD. Take Exit 3A, second exit after crossing the Wilson Bridge, marked “Indian Head, Rt. 210 South”. Drive south on 210 approximately 4.0 miles to Fort Washington Road, turn right and continue east to park entrance. **

From Maryland – I-95 South, take local lanes: onto Exit 3. Rt. 210 marked “Forest Hgts/Indian Head” and follow signs for 210 South to Indian Head. Drive south on 210 approximately 4.0 miles to Fort Washington Road, turn right and continue east to park entrance. **

** Make a right off of the main road onto L’Enfant Road (sign points to “Fishing Area/Lighthouse”) Follow L’Enfant Road down to the river. There is a parking area at the end of the road and then walk the last few 100 yards to the light tower.

  • Lighthouses can be visited in ANY order.
  • Merchandise commemorating this event will be available at select sites along the route.
  • Complimentary Souvenirs available as long as supplies last.
  • Fees, schedules and access to lighthouses are set by each Maryland lighthouse organization and are subject to change.
  • This event will be held RAIN or SHINE. Hours 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days, unless otherwise noted.
  • One or more of the Challenge lights require that anyone climbing the lighthouses must have shoes on with heel support – i.e., cannot climb in flip flops, open sandals without a strap around the heel, etc.
  • 42 inch height requirement to climb Concord Point Light. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all stops along the Challenge route.
  • Some of the lighthouse locations and gift stores do not accept credit cards.
