Newsletter editors Paula & Lauren, “parents” of our third signup, hamster Gustave, mentioned in the Summer and Fall 2010 newsletters, have graciously allowed me to salute keeper mascot numbers four & five – felines Sabby and Toffee in this quarter’s “Circle of Honor”. According to member Melissa, Sabby, a dark gray tabby, adopted her in December 2002. After settling into a new home and routines, Melissa decided Sabby needed a roommate. While shopping at a Petco store one day, Melissa noticed some kittens for adoption by a local cat rescue group. A member of the group offered a cute tortoise shell named Roxanne and it was “love at first sight”. Unfortunately, Sabby did not put out the welcome wagon to her new companion. With determination, Roxanne decided to ignore the growls and a truce was declared a few days later. Melissa thought the name Roxanne was a bad fit and the name “Toffee” was suggested and stuck. While Sabby is laid back, Toffee is energetic, nosy and needy. In 2009, the brave cats became international travelers and after a quarantine period in the U.S., were cleared to travel to the United Kingdom. Melissa’s apprehension about Sabby and Toffee adjusting to their new homes were unfounded and the pair was ruling the roost after three days in England. They knew they were finally home and took full advantage of it. In March 2010, Melissa had to return to America and left her beloved pets with a good caregiver. Sabby & Toffee are happy in their new posts as the Chapter’s first “International Lighthouse Keeper’s Mascots” and have taken their duties to heart and are proud to serve. Melissa has since returned to the UK and reunited with her kitties.
