August 8, 2005: Our very first work day at Thomas Point was very popular. We had a lot of volunteers who suited up and then scrubbed down the light with a 10% bleach solution to clean off bird guano and kill germs. That’s one of the less glamorous jobs of lighthouse work. Other volunteers removed some of the kitchen cabinets, while others disassembled the oven for removal from the light. Windows were cleaned and sparkled when we left.
August 27, 2005: The second workday at Thomas Point was not quiet as popular as the first and about half the volunteers showed up. We had planned on painting the exterior of the light before winter set in. However, after a week of clear and warm weather, it poured over night and it was too damp to paint during the day. As a result we changed plans and finished the clean up and began removal of the more modern paneling from the walls. Panels were removed from what used to be the sitting room and the former kitchen.
October 2005: On our third volunteer weekend we did get to paint the exterior siding on the main deck, the railings around the cupola and started on the railings on the main deck. Some of the deck rails that had loosened over time were tightened up. More paneling was also removed from the former kitchen.
