Keeper Haywood B. & Amy W. Pettigrew Anecdotes
Keeper Haywood B. Pettigrew and his wife Amy are most likely the only officially appointed African American couple that worked in the Lighthouse Service in the Chesapeake Bay region. Haywood Pettigrew fought with the 2nd US Colored Cavalry against the Confederates, ending his service as a Sergeant. After resigning in 1882 as Keeper of Craney Island Lighthouse, he and his family moved back to North Carolina, where he became a Minister.
