Five volunteers arrived at Calvert Marine museum and received instructions for the day. We were to work on the five benches that have sat under the Drum Point Lighthouse for over 20 years. Richard Dodds had already started the work and we picked up where he’d left off.
The day started out warm and sunny. As the day wore on it became a bit breezy and cooled down. We took a break and Museum Director Doug Alves took us out to Cove Point where we saw the fantastic work they’d done on the Keeper’s house which is now open for rental. It will be a lighthouse lovers dream come true to spend some time out there. Check out the Calvert Marine Museum web site for details.
We were able to scrape down the metal for three of the benches and the wood for all five. We put a coat of final paint on the metal of four of the park benches plus all the arms. These took all day to dry. We put primer on the wood of one and a half benches before we ran out of the primer and we got the paint applied to one of them. More work needs to be done but we had to leave before a wedding party arrived for a ceremony under the light.
It was a very pleasant day to spend around a lighthouse!
