It was a nice day with temperatures in the 60s with a slight threat of rain as three volunteers met for the first of our work days on the Lightship Chesapeake in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. The harbor was crowded with tourists once the day got under way. We started off by scraping off the flaking paint from where ever we could spot it in the anchor windlass room. Once we finished that we focused on the overhead area in the forward section just outside the crews sleeping quarters. The paint is really pealing there. We then used the Shop-Vac to clean up all the resultant paint chips. Another task was to clean some old plastic curtain slats that were tucked away in one of the other ships. These can be used to replace the old plastic curtain strips that have been on the ship as long as I can remember. Volunteers also emptied and sorted the contents of the last storage bin in the Lathe room. We then scraped and vacuumed the bin in preparation for priming and painting in the future. We also cleared out some of the old paint containers from the paint locker which is tucked below the Anchor Windlass room and has been in need of clearing out for some time. While it was a small crew – we were able to check a few items off the work list.
