US Lighthouse Society Passport

The Passports for this program are available from the US Lighthouse Society at 9005 Point No Point Rd. NE, Hansville, WA 98340.  There is a $10.00 + $2.50 s&p charge for the passport.  Once the Passport is filled in with different Lighthouse stamps, you send the passport back and you will receive an embroidered patch the says “I’ve Seen the Light!”  They also return your passport. There are four levels of accomplishment in the U.S. Lighthouse Society Passport Program.

This is the current list (September, 2005) of lighthouses that are participating in our "Passport" program. Some of the lighthouses listed have not confirmed their times, admission charges, or telephone number. These lighthouses have questions marks in their listing. As these lighthouses confirm their information, or as new lighthouses join the program, an update will be issued in the Bulletin. It is always advisable to contact the lighthouse prior to visiting to confirm hours and admission fees. Any admission charge stated is in addition to the $1.00 donation to be given to receive your stamp.

CALIFORNIA - 22

Alcatraz Island Lighthouse: The hours of operation vary with the season - departures via Blue & Gold Fleet (Pier 41, Fisherman's Wharf, San Francisco) are available throughout the day beginning at 9:30am. Evening tours and combined Angel Island - Alcatraz Island tours are also available. Alcatraz is open every day except Christmas and New Year day. Battery Point (Crescent City): Open April thru September, Wednesday thru Sunday between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Fees: $2.00 Adults; $0.50 children 12 and under. Cape Mendocino Lighthouse (relocated to Shelter Cove): The lighthouse (as of 2004) is open daily from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Note: The King Range National Conservation Area is known as "The Lost Coast" for good reason. The country is very rugged and isolated. Set aside about an hour for the drive on Briceland Road and Shelter Cove Road. Crescent City: See Battery Point.

East Brother Light Station: Day use visitors have access to the lighthouse only during the tour available on Saturday, during the summer months and depending on other scheduled events. For groups of 1 to 18 persons, the rate is $15 per person. Day use visitors are picked up at the Galley Cafe at approximately 11:15 am and returned to the Harbor at approximately 3:30 PM. No food or beverage service is available on the island for day use activities. The "Passport" stamp is located in the gift shop. Fort Point: Open Wednesday thru Sunday Between 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Fees:none . Maritime Museum of Monterey: Daily except Wednesdays, 10am-5pm. Fees: $5.00 adults, $4.00 seniors, $3.00 ages 13-18, $2.00 ages 6-12 and free to children 5 and under. Old Point Loma: Open daily between 9:00 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. Open until 6:15 p.m. during the summer, July 4 through Labor Day. Fees: No admission for the lighthouse. The park charges a fee of $5.00 per vehicle or $3.00 per individual if entry is by walking, bicycling, or commercial transportation. Pigeon Point: The lighthouse is currently closed to the public, but the grounds remain open. Open Sundays between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.. Fees: No admission charge. Point Cabrillo: Lighthouse & Gift Shop open 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. March through October: Every Day; October 1 through November 23: Friday-Monday; November 24 through February 28: Saturday & Sunday. The Lightkeeper’s Home and Interpretive Center open 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Friday through Sunday, March through October. Fees: $15 per person. Point Montara: Open daily between 8:00am to sunset. Fees: No admission charge. The "Passport" stamp will be located in the hostel office. There is no access to the lighthouse property. Point Pinos: Open Thursday through Monday between 1 and 4 p.m.. Extended summer hours 11:30 - 5:00 p.m., every day. Fees: $2.00 adults and $1.00 youths. Point Reyes: Open Thursday thru Monday between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Fees: None. The "Passport" stamp will be located at the visitor center. Point Sur: Tours on Saturdays at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.; Sundays at 10 a.m.; Wednesdays 10 a.m. AND 2:00 p.m. (April to September only); Thursdays 10 a.m. (July and August only). Point Vicente: the tower and a small museum are open the second Saturday of month between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.. Children under 7 are not allowed in the tower. Santa Cruz (faux): Open Wednesday through Monday between 12 noon and 4 p.m.. Fees: None. The "Passport" stamp will be located at the desk. St George Reef: SGRLPS offers helicopter flights and tours of the lighthouse to the public. The tours are scheduled, weather permitting, October through June of each year. Departing from the Crescent City Airport in a helicopter, passengers enjoy a flight to the lighthouse, landing on a section of the caisson roof, near the base of the tower. From there they are greeted and taken for a one hour tour. Flights are $170.00 per person, cash or check only. Table Bluff Tower: Relocated to Eureka’s Woodley Island Marina. The Fresnel lens has been retrieved from the Old Point Loma Lighthouse and is now on display at the Humboldt Bay Maritime Museum in Eureka. Fees: No admission posted. Trinidad Head (faux): Open second Sunday in June by Coast Guard. Fees: none. Passport stamp available at the Trinidad Museum, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, noon to 3:00 p.m., May through August, or at the Trinidad Bay Bed & Breakfast, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily, February through November. Trinidad Memorial Light: Open 24 hours daily. Fees: none. CONNECTICUT - 3

Black Rock Harbor Lighthouse (Fayerweather Island Light): View only. The lighthouse grounds are accessible by parking at the end of Barnum Boulevard at Seaside Park in Bridgeport. Faulkner Island: View only. There is an annual open house in September for those who can reach the island with their own boats. Does not participate in Passport program. Five Mile Point Lighthouse: View only. The Lighthouse Point Park rangers occasionally offer tours of the lighthouse by reservation only. Does not participate in Passport program. Great Captain Island Lighthouse: View only. The ferry to the island is open to Greenwich residents only. The lighthouse is not open to the public and is best seen by boat. New London Harbor Lighthouse (Pequot Light): View only. The keeper's house is privately owned and the station is not open to the public. The best views are from the water. Saybrook Breakwater Lighthouse: View only. The lighthouse is not open to the public and is best viewed by boat. Does not participate in Passport program.

Sheffield Island: Open weekends and holidays May 28 through June 26 and daily June 27 through Labor Day. Site accessible by ferry or private boat only. Fees: $16 Adults, $12 Children age 4-12, $5 Children 3 and under. There is a $2 discount on Mondays and Tuesdays for senior citizens. . The "Passport" stamp will be located at the souvenir display inside the lighthouse. DELAWARE - 1

Fenwick Island Light: Open most days, weather permitting. Visitors are allowed in the base to view a mini-museum. Climbing the Lighthouse is prohibited. Overfalls Maritime Museum: Open May 28 through October 10, 2005 Fridays 11 a.m. - 4 p.m., Saturday 11 a.m. - 4 p.m., and Sunday 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. (also in July/Aug) Thursday 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. (and on Holiday Mondays) 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Columbus Day) but NOT open Fridays in September and October. Anclote Key Lighthouse: First free guided tours of the lighthouse were given October 15, 2005 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.. Does not participate in Passport program. Boca Grande: Open Wednesday through Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. June through October 5 days a week; Monday through Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. November through May 7 days a week. It is closed on the following major holidays: New Years Day, Martin Luther King's Birthday, Easter, Memorial Day, Indepedence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas. There is a $2.00 honor fee per vehicle to enter Gasparilla Island State Park. Lighthouse honor admission is $2.00 per person; under 12 free. The "Passport" stamp is located in the Museum Gift Shop. Cedar Keys: The decommissioned lighthouse on Seahorse Key is used as a center for marine research and environmental education by the University of Florida. Garden Key Light Station: Open during daylight hours; closed at dark. Fees: $5.00 - 17 and older. The "Passport" stamp will be located at the gift shop. Jupiter Inlet: Open Saturday through Wednesday between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. with the last tour leaving the Visitor Center at 3:15 p.m; closed Thursdays and Fridays. Sunset tours are the last Wednesday of each month. A height requirement of 4' has been instituted for safe climbing. Fees: $6.00. The "Passport" stamp will be located at the registration counter. Ponce DeLeon Inlet: Open daily from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. (last admission 5:00 p.m.), Labor Day until Memorial Day. After Memorial Day, the Light Station will be open from 10:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. (last admission 8 p.m.). Fees: $5.00 Adults, $1.50 for children 11 and under. Gray's Harbor (Westport Maritime Museum): The lighthouse is not open, but may be viewed from an observation deck. The Maritime Museum can provide directions to this deck. Open Fall, Winter, and Spring between noon and 4:00 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday and Memorial Weekend through Labor Day between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. WISCONSIN - 4

Algoma: View only. The pier and light can be seen across the Ahnapee River. Best viewed from a parking area along Lake Street near where the south pier connects to the shore. Visitors can walk out on the south pier and look across the channel. Does not participate in the Passport program. Apostles Island Light Stations: Comprised of Devil's Island, La Points Island, Old Michigan Island, Outer Island, Raspberry Island and Sand Island Lighthouses. See individual lighthouse listing.

Baileys Harbor Range Lights: These lighthouses are not open to the public, however they may be viewed from the Ridges Sanctuary Nature Center. Fees: $2.00 to hike on the trails. The "Passport" stamp will be located at the Ridges Sanctuary Nature Center. Canal Station (Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal): Site open, tower usually closed but open during the Door County Lighthouse Walk in late May. Fees: Not posted. Does not participate in Passport program. No contact information available.

Chambers Island: The station is open to the public on most weekends and some weekdays from June 15 through Labor Day. The only way to get out to the island is by private boat or via a charter captain. Does not participate in the Passport program. Devil's Island: Experienced boaters and sea kayakers who reach the island will find the lighthouse staffed with a volunteer lightkeeper during the summer season; tours of the tower are usually available between 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.. Apostle Islands Cruise Service offers excellent views of the lighthouse from the lake. Fees: Not posted. Does not participate in Passport program. Kewaunee Pierhead: Not open to the public. Pictures can be taken from the beach at the end of Ellis Street. Does not participate in Passport program. No contact information available.

La Points Island: The lighthouses on Long Island (Old and New La Points and Chequamegon Point) are not open to the public, but may be viewed from outside. Long Island is not served by scheduled tour boats, although the Apostle Islands Cruise Service sometimes provides special trips. Fees: Not posted. Does not participate in Passport program. Manitowoc Breakwater: The interior of the lighthouse is not open to the public, however, you can walk out the north breakwater to the lighthouse. Head out to Maritime Drive and park at the marina parking lot and take the 15-minute walk out to the lighthouse, or view it from the south side of the harbor - just follow the 'car ferry' signs to the SS Badger dock. North Pier Head (Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal North Pierhead): Site open and tower closed. Accessible in good weather by walking the pier from the Coast Guard station at the foot of Utah Street. North Point: Open Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (office staff hours); Saturday and Sunday 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (By appointment and/or based on volunteer coverage). Old Michigan Island Light: Only the most experienced private boaters and sea kayakers should consider attempting a trip to this lighthouse. Volunteers are usually available for tours between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.. Apostle Islands Cruise Service offers excellent views of the lighthouse from the lake. Fees: Not posted. Does not participate in Passport program. Plum Island: Lighthouse is inaccessible from land. Plum Island can be seen from the Washington Island Ferry or by charter service operated by the Shoreline Resort at Gills Rock. Does not participate in Passport program. No contact iformation available.

Port Washington: Open April through October for tours. Fees: Not posted. Does not participate in Passport program. Pottawatomie: Lighthouse is inaccessible from land. open for viewing from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM Monday through Saturday. Closed on Sundays. Rock Island is a difficult a place to visit and a whole day is required to make the trip. Fees: Not posted. "Passport" stamp will be located at the lighthouse. Fees: No admission charge. "Passport" stamps will be located at the Visitor Center Headquarters in Bayfield and at the Raspberry Island Lighthouse. Sand Island: National Park Service rangers provide tours of the lighthouse, usually during the hours of 12:00 noon and 4:00 p.m., during the summer. Sand Island is a popular destination for intermediate-level sea kayakers and private boaters. No dock at lighthouse. Does not participate in Passport program. Wind Point: Open grounds only sunrise to 11:00 p.m.but open houses are held periodically. Tours to the top of the lighthouse are ONLY available during the Friends of the Wind Point Lighthouse Tours to the Top the First Sunday in July, August and September. Tours run from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.. Fees: $10 per person. Space is limited, reservations are strongly suggested. Does not participate in Passport program.
