Page 12:   Workshop for Lighthouse Restoration
by Myrna Cherix
Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge (CNWR) held a two-day conference to discuss historic and cultural issues on Assateague Island. The main topic of the first day was the Assateague Lighthouse. Lou Hinds, CNWR manager, is enthusiastic about beginning the restoration of the Assateague Lighthouse and would like to see it begin in fiscal year 2008.

The day began with a presentation by Myrna Cherrix regarding the history of the Assateague Lighthouse and Assateague Village. She was followed by Joseph Jakubik, Manager of the Historic Preservation Division of the International Chimney Corporation. He summarized the 2005 "Assessment of the Assateague Lighthouse" and spoke of additional issues that have become known. A more thorough survey of the lighthouse will be done examining the exterior of the column from top to bottom. After lunch participants were given an opportunity to visit the lighthouse and witness for themselves the challenges facing CNWR and their partner Chincoteague Natural History Association (CNHA).

At the conclusion of the day a list of short and long term "action items" was developed. Some of them are already being addressed. A removable floor was installed in the entrance to the lighthouse in time for this year's opening. It covers the large concrete blocks that formerly supported the generators making the area available for a small gift shop.

About 35 participants attended the workshop. They included representatives from Federal, State, Fish and Wildlife, and National Park Service historic preservation; United States Coast Guard; Congresswoman Drake's representative; Accomack County and Town of Chincoteague; CNHA board members, CNWR staff and volunteers, International Chimney, and interested persons from the community. Joyce and Robert Holland represented the Chesapeake Chapter, United States Lighthouse Society.

CNWR acquired ownership of the Assateague Lighthouse in 2004 from the U.S. Coast Guard who retains ownership of the beacon as an active aid to navigation. CNHA, whose mission is to supplement human and financial resources to enhance visitor programs and educational activities at CNWR, has opened the lighthouse for tours and is actively seeking funds for restoration. The estimated cost is about one million dollars.
