The Chesapeake Chapter is pleased to announce the special guests for this year’s 2009 event.

We are pleased to announce that Tom and Christine Cardaci, The Lighthouse Hunters, will be participating in the Maryland Lighthouse Challenge for their forth year. They will be set up at the Turkey Point Lighthouse both Saturday and Sunday. This enthusiastic and energetic duo prides themselves on having visited 1,136 lighthouses in the U.S. and Canada as of this writing, although that number will probably increase by the time the Challenge rolls around. They will be selling and autographing copies of "Lighthouses and Lightships of America--The Hunters Guide" and will also be showcasing an assortment of lighthouse photos they have taken during their extensive travels. This will be Tom and Christine’s fourth year with us. Book cover.

Author Wayne Kirklin will be at the Turkey Point Lighhtouse location on Saturday, September 19 and Sunday September 20 selling and autographing copies of his book Lightships: Floating Lighthouses of the Mid-Atlantic. This will be Wayne's first visit with us, and we are pleased to welcome him "aboard!"

Publisher's Notes:
Moored near shifting shoals and treacherous reefs, lightships remained on station during all weather conditions and played a vital role in keeping America's waterways safe for navigation. From 1820 to 1985, light vessels warned of treacherous seas and pointed the way to safe harbors. In Lightships, author Wayne Kirklin chronicles the eighty-five ships that protected the mid-Atlantic coast. From New York Harbor to the southern most edge of North Carolina's notorious Cape Fear, Kirklin details the unsung role this fleet played in keeping America's merchant marines safe. Read Lightships to discover an almost forgotten but vital element of American maritime history.

As one of the featured stops along the Maryland Lighthouse Challenge route, you will have the opportunity to board our very own Lightship Chesapeake, moored at Pier 3, Baltimore's Inner Harbor.

We are delighted to have photographer Harry Fahl participate in the Challenge for the third year. He will have his beautiful lighthouse photography on display and for sale at the Concord Point Lighthouse grounds on Saturday September 19 and Sunday September 20. Harry is a generous supporter of the Challenge and will again be donating a framed photograph for our Challenge raffle. Be sure to see the piece on display at the Seven Foot Knoll Lighthouse in Baltimore!

This year Donna Elias celebrates the 20th Anniversary of her Great American Lighthouses Collection. Beginning in April, Donna's show will highlight works from her acclaimed series. The artist promises that these shows will be some of her best presentations to date!

Each show features dozens of prints, paintings and gift ware from Donna Elias' Great American Lighthouses & By the Seaside Collections. And of course Donna is always on hand to say hi, sign your prints and discuss her work.

Donna has been a wonderful supporter of the Maryland Lighthouse Challenge since its inception back in 2003. We are thrilled she will be including this year's Challenge as part of her year-long anniversary tour! Donna will be set up at the Concord Point Lighthouse grounds on Saturday, September 19 and Sunday, September 20.

Author David Biggy will be on hand at the Calvert Marine Museum on Saturday September 19 and Sunday September 20 autographing copies of this recently released photo book entitled, Lighthouses: Maine to Florida. The book is a photographic journey from Maine to Florida which includes 200 lighthouse images and a state-by-state list of the organizations responsible for preserving them. A percentage of the book sales will go to the Calvert Marine Museum and the Chesapeake Chapter.

This will be David's first appearance at the Maryland Lighthouse Challenge and we are very pleased to welcome him aboard! Book cover.
